Staten Island Paver Patios

Custom Paver Patios Installed by Our Own Crew — Not Subcontractors

Island Built Masonry designs and installs paver patios for Staten Island homeowners who want outdoor living spaces built to last. We handle every project with our in-house crew from base preparation through final paver setting and edge restraint — never subcontracted, never rushed.

Staten Island Paver Patio Installation Company

A paver patio is only as good as what is underneath it. The design choices — paver type, pattern, border detail — are what homeowners see. But the base preparation, bedding sand depth, and edge restraint installation are what determine whether that patio looks the same in 15 years or becomes a shifting, uneven mess by year three.

Island Built Masonry has installed paver patios throughout Staten Island long enough to know exactly what NYC winters do to shortcuts. Freeze-thaw cycles heave improperly set pavers out of plane. Skimped base layers allow settling wherever foot traffic concentrates. We build bases that absorb and drain freeze-thaw movement without disrupting the surface above.

Homeowners in Great Kills, Eltingville, Annadale, and New Dorp call us because they want the job done once — correctly — by people accountable for the result.

Paver Patio Installation Services

We install complete paver patios from excavation through finished surface sealing. Every installation includes:

  • Excavation to proper depth for the base material required
  • Compacted class 2 crusher run base — minimum 6 inches for patios, 8 inches for driveways
  • Bedding sand screeded to consistent 1-inch depth
  • Paver installation in your selected pattern with consistent joint spacing
  • Polymeric sand swept into joints and activated — locks pavers, resists weeds and ants
  • Mechanical compaction of the finished surface
  • Rigid edge restraint along all perimeter edges to prevent migration
  • Optional: paver sealer applied after joint sand cures

We also install paver steps, paver walkways, paver driveways, and paver pool surrounds as part of a complete outdoor project or as standalone installations.

Paver pattern options we install regularly:

  • Running bond — clean, linear, most common
  • Herringbone (45 and 90 degree) — highest interlock, ideal for driveways
  • Basket weave — traditional look, complements older architecture
  • Ashlar and random patterns — for natural stone and tumbled pavers
  • Soldier course borders — frame the field and elevate the design

Paver Types We Install

Concrete Pavers

Manufactured concrete pavers are the most versatile and cost-effective paver option for Staten Island patios. They are engineered to a consistent 80mm thickness, dimensionally stable, available in dozens of colors and finishes, and rated for vehicle load where needed. Brands we install regularly include Techo-Bloc, Cambridge Pavingstones, and EP Henry.

Concrete pavers are available in standard rectangular, Holland stone, and larger format (12x12, 6x9) sizes. Tumbled-edge finishes give concrete pavers a more organic, aged appearance without the variability of natural stone.

Brick Pavers

Genuine clay brick pavers are the historically correct choice for many Staten Island homes — particularly in St. George, Stapleton, and other neighborhoods with older architectural character. Brick pavers offer natural color variation, extraordinary durability, and a traditional aesthetic that concrete pavers cannot fully replicate.

We install both reclaimed brick pavers (for a historic look) and new manufactured brick pavers. Clay brick holds color without fading and never needs sealing to maintain appearance.

Natural Bluestone Pavers

Pennsylvania bluestone is a premium choice that suits Staten Island’s traditional residential character. We install bluestone in both irregular (stepping stone) and dimensional (cut to consistent rectangles) patterns. Dimensional bluestone at consistent thickness is the most stable installation — irregular bluestone requires more care in base preparation to achieve an even surface.

Bluestone is slip-resistant when wet, naturally textured, and does not require sealing. Its blue-gray color complements nearly every exterior finish used on Staten Island homes.

Permeable Pavers

For properties with drainage challenges or where NYC stormwater regulations apply, permeable pavers offer a code-compliant option that allows rainwater to percolate through the joint system and into the sub-base rather than running off. We install permeable paver systems with open-graded base materials designed to manage stormwater on site.

Our Paver Patio Design Process

Step 1 — Consultation and Site Visit We meet you at the property, walk the space, and listen to how you want to use it. Entertaining, dining, a fire pit area, access paths — the intended use shapes the design. We discuss paver type, pattern, color, and any features (steps, walls, borders) that complete the project.

Step 2 — Design Layout and Estimate We produce a written estimate with full scope: dimensions, material specifications, base specifications, and any accessory work (steps, walls, lighting conduit). You know exactly what you are getting before you sign anything.

Step 3 — Permits Most residential paver patios in NYC do not require a DOB permit, but projects that involve structural walls, significant grade change, or connection to drainage infrastructure may. We identify permit requirements at the estimate stage and handle filing where required.

Step 4 — Excavation and Base Installation We excavate to the required depth, remove all material from the site, and install the compacted aggregate base in lifts. Every lift is mechanically compacted before the next is added. This is the phase that determines longevity.

Step 5 — Paver Installation Bedding sand is screeded to a consistent 1-inch depth. Pavers are laid in pattern, cut precisely at all borders and edges, and checked for consistency throughout. Border courses and soldier course details are set before the field pavers.

Step 6 — Compaction, Joint Sand, and Sealing The finished surface is compacted with a plate compactor over a protective pad to lock pavers into the sand bed. Polymeric joint sand is swept into joints and activated with water. Optional paver sealer is applied after the sand cures.

Frequently Asked Questions — Paver Patios Staten Island

How long do paver patios last in Staten Island? A properly installed paver patio with an adequate compacted base should last 25 to 30 years or more under Staten Island conditions. The pavers themselves are nearly indestructible — what ages is the joint sand and, occasionally, the polymeric sand locking system. Refreshing joint sand every 8 to 10 years keeps the surface stable. Individual pavers that crack or chip can be replaced without disturbing the surrounding installation.

Do paver patios hold up to NYC winters? Yes, when installed correctly. The freeze-thaw resistance of a paver patio comes from the installation — specifically the base depth, base material quality, and drainage. Water that cannot drain from under a patio freezes and expands, pushing pavers out of plane. We install bases designed to drain and manage freeze-thaw movement. Properly installed paver patios handle NYC winters better than poured concrete, which cracks when slabs move.

Do you use subcontractors for paver patio work? No. Island Built Masonry does not subcontract any phase of a paver patio installation. Our in-house crew handles excavation, base installation, paver setting, and finishing. This is non-negotiable for us — it is how we maintain consistent quality and stand behind every project we complete.

Can you match existing pavers for an extension or repair? We will do our best. Many manufacturers produce consistent colorways over time, and we source from the same suppliers regularly. For older installations or discontinued products, we discuss options honestly — sometimes a contrasting border is the best solution when an exact match is not achievable. We never overstate our ability to match.

Does Island Built Masonry install paver driveways, not just patios? Yes. We install paver driveways, walkways, pool surrounds, and steps using the same materials and base specifications. Driveways require a deeper base (8 inches minimum of compacted aggregate) and herringbone pattern for maximum interlock under vehicle loads. Contact us for a free estimate on any paver project.
